Avoiding holiday weight gain will be very simple with these tips to help you along the way. Do you think one little holiday cookie won’t do much damage to your weight loss efforts? Well, did you know that one little cookie a day for a month can add an extra pound to your weight? The temptation of those mouth-watering treats and heavy dinners can be a little overwhelming at times.
Here’s a few tips on how to avoid holiday weight gain.
Never Skip Meals
Some people rationalize that if they skip breakfast and eat a measly lunch, that they can then splurge a little for dinner and dessert. Unfortunately, this usually backfires. If you don’t feed your body regularly throughout the day, it will go into “starvation mode” – thinking it needs to conserve calories in case there is a shortage of food. You will burn many more calories if you eat small, regular meals during the day, including breakfast!
Eat Before the Party
If you have been invited to a party where you anticipate there will be lots of tempting food, have a snack before you go. The best kind of snack will be one with protein, which is very satisfying. Try a container of yogurt, string cheese, or some cottage cheese. This way, you won’t be ravished the moment you walk in the door and you can feel in control enough to make wise food choices while you are there.
Stay as far Away as Possible from the Buffet Table
When you are trying to lose weight during the holidays, the buffet table can be your worst enemy! Usually, these are loaded with plenty of temptation – fat loaded dips and sauces, sugar packed desserts, and all those calorie filled fried foods are enough to make your head spin. First, if you can, take a small plate so you won’t feel enticed into filling up a large one with foods you don’t need. Second, load your plate with the foods that are the least damaging to your diet – veggies and fruit, nuts, shrimp, crab, etc. Lastly, it’s okay to indulge a little and take a few treats. But savor each bite and try not to go back for seconds!
Drink Lots of Water
You’ll hear this over and over again, but that’s because of how important it really is. Water will help keep you hydrated and full, while having no calories. It helps flush out the fat that you are learning how to lose. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses per day.
Plenty of Exercise
If you are serious about trying to lose weight during the holidays, you have to make time for exercise. Try to sneak in some extra activity to your day like taking the stairs instead of elevator, park farther away when you’re shopping, or go out and build a snowman! Exercise can be enjoyable if you pick activities that you take pleasure in.
With these tips, you will be well on your way to learning how to avoid Holiday weight gain! Just remember, New Year’s Resolutions are just around the corner!
