Get a peek into what really drives Tony Robbins in his new documentary Tony Robbins I Am Not Your Guru.

Once a year in the US Tony Robbins puts on a 6 day seminar called Date With Destiny.  He has somewhat of an unorthodox way of handling people, but he uses language and words to help his attendees get to the core of their problems and together they find a solution.  He has this uncanny way of reading people, looking beyond the words they say and really digs deep into what’s really bothering them.  He never ceases to amaze me and so many others who have followed him throughout the years.  It’s intriguing to watch a man of his caliber help so many people with such a drive and passion for human connections.

Tony Robbins I Am Not Your Guru is a small glimpse into what his seminar is all about.  With the average ticket costing $4,995 and all 6 days lasting well over 12 hours in most cases, people flock at the chance to see him live.  In one of his first statements to the crowd he says we’re not broken.  We’re not broken.  That’s a powerful statement and assures you that no matter what happened in your past you can take it and use it to your advantage, your driving force to change and grow.  Tony speaks of his mom and upbringing briefly, and says that he wouldn’t be the person he is today if he’d had a different mother.  And that pain was a contributor in his mission and his drive to help people.

One of the people that stood out to me was a young woman, Dawn who suffered a lot throughout her 26 years.  She had an upbringing that leveraged God as a way to make her do things she did not want to.  As a result it made her feel unworthy of love…true love from people she cares about.  Tony had her pick 3 people out of the crowd to be her “uncles.”  They were selected as her support team to help her when she needed the guidance and support.  Since the seminar she is perusing a career in helping other children who are in similar situations.  Very inspiring to see her use her past to help others.  Tony says “Our entire life changes in a moment.”  And that’s certainly the case for Dawn.

The Director asked Tony what moment in time did he know this is what he was destined for.  He spoke about a time in high school when he was in detention.  His teacher told him he had the gift of communication and his teacher saw it in him, before he even did.  That was a turning point in Tony’s life.  And it made me reflect on some of my own teachers and how they changed my life.
