Exercising is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, it is not everyone’s cup of tea. Everyone is different, and some people just don’t enjoy the gym. That’s why it’s important to find some fun ways to exercise, and burn more calories so you’ll be motivated to go out and do it!

1. Run or Bike with Friends!

Running and biking can be so tedious and boring on your own, but if you bring some friends along, it can turn into an awesome afternoon.  It doesn’t matter what kind of shape everyone is in, just have fun! Take breaks as often as you need to, drink lots of water, and tell lots of jokes!

2. Take a Dance Class

Even if you’ve never danced a step in your life, if you find the right style, even dancing badly can be lots of fun. Dancing involves lots of movement and will work some muscles as well as keep your heart rate up. It’s like weights and cardio all in one!  Any form of dance can be a good way to stay in shape, but salsa dancing comes highly recommended for maintaining good fitness.

3. Go Ice Skating

While typically a seasonal activity, ice skating can be lots of fun, and it actually burns almost twice as many calories as simply walking.  Skating is especially beneficial because it is very low impact – it’s easy on your joints!

4. Go for a Hike

Lots of people scoff at the idea of a hike, but in a nice, scenic location, it can actually be a really fun adventure. Hiking will mainly consist of walking, but the hills, tree stumps, and other obstacles will work your muscles just a little bit more than walking on a flat surface.

5. Try a New Sport

Even if sports aren’t your thing and you’re not very athletic, playing a new sport even just a few times can be fun, and you might even discover a hidden talent!  Believe it or not, ultimate Frisbee can actually be very beneficial to your health, and the casual feel of it will relieve any pressure to be good.

6. Try Geocaching

Geocaching started long before Pokémon came along, in fact, way back in year 2000!  Mostly used by those who had advanced GPS gear back then but quickly became a trend that is on the rise. People will place “caches” (usually a box full of small items) in a location, and add it to the geocaching app. Once downloaded, you can use the app to track these boxes, and record your findings. It’s a super fun way to get some exercise and it really fosters a feeling of community, as it will often introduce strangers to each other. Learn more about the app here!

7. Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go is an interactive virtual game you can download on your iPhone or Android device.  While the game has some mixed reviews the basic concept of getting out and moving is very much a high point for the game.  Be on the look out for eggs, Poke Balls, and potions to help you in your quest.  Discover new places in the real world to advance in the game!  Learn more about this app here!

8. Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is an aerobic workout that will help you build strength and balance at the same time, and can help you burn up to 800 calories an hour! While indoor rock climbing is more common (and safer!) outdoor rock climbing can be tons of fun once you’ve had some practice inside.

9. Martial Arts

Take some martial arts classes! With so many different forms, there is bound to be one out there that you like, and no matter which one you choose, it’s an excellent way to stay in shape. You will also have the added bonus of learning some self-defense. You never know when that could come in handy!

10. Go to a Playground

Have you ever walked past a playground and thought how great it would be to be a kid again? Well, grab some friends and have at it!  There are lots of fun playground games that can appeal to adults, and be navigating the many ramps and bars will provide a great workout!

Whatever you choose to do, make a commitment to yourself to do it regularly, and get some friends involved! Everything is more fun with friends, so bring them out, have some fun, and burn more calories while staying in shape!

To Your Success,

Samantha Bush
